The single was from the album 'Tasty' which did not feature the Neptunes as heavily as her previous albums. In 2003 Kelis finally found fame in her country with the single 'Milkshake,' which was a massive success in Europe, Asia and USA, and she began dating rapper Nas (born Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones). Only one single was released 'Young Fresh N New'. It only sold 80,000 copies and was entirely produced by The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo) again, similarly to her debut. Not a great success, it only sold 249,000 copies to date.Īfter finding her largest audience in Europe, Kelis released her second album titled Wanderland (2001) in Europe only, which like her first album did not fare well. The album was released in USA, Europe and Asia, but did not find much audience in the USA. The video feautures Kelis leading a pack of angry women down the street screaming 'I hate you so much right now!'. Soon afterwards, she released her debut album, Kaleidoscope in 1999 of which the first single was 'Caught Out There,' a song based on the time she caught her boyfriend cheating on her, and she beat him. But she was not without problems, after her parents realised they could not cope with her unruly behavior (Kelis shaved all her hair off at age 13, soon afterwards dyeing the regrowth the colors of the rainbow), Kelis moved out of the family home, continuing her private education.Īfter a short spell working as a model, 5'10" Kelis began appearing on songs by Neptunes produced rappers such as 'Got Your Money' by the late rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard. Growing up in Middle Class Harlem, New York Kelis' childhood was not a deprived one.

Her name is an amalgamation of her parents' first names, her black father Kenneth and Chinese-Puerto Rican mother Eveliss. Kelis (born Kelis Rogers on August 21, 1979), is known simply by her first name Kelis (pronounced Kuh-lees). As an artist who could become, with the proper guidance, a prominent figure for years to come, Kelis is one not to dismiss. Kaleidoscope starts out strongly enough with standouts such as "Caught out There," "Get Along with You," and "In the Morning." Sadly enough, the focus seems to lose its footing midway and from there on out, the remaining songs run from average to good. Although comparisons to Neneh Cherry are inevitable, she does carve out a niche for herself, armed with undeniable talent. It's when Kelis and her production team create tracks that best fit her voice and uniqueness that the end results are outstanding. The album's flaws stem from steps taken backward toward what one could call "mainstream" R&B. This release showcases the development of a great talent. As well as producing the album Williams and Hugo also feature on album track Ghetto Children where Slick Rick is a co-writer. The third and final single from the album, “Get Along with You” also charted. “Good Stuff” also proved a success, reaching number 19 on the UK chart. After reaching number 52 on the UK Singles Chart on imports alone, “Caught Out There” was given a proper release in the UK, eventually peaking at number four. Kaleidoscope charted on the US Billboard 200, In Europe all three singles “Caught Out There”, “Good Stuff”, and “Get Along with You” - attained commercial success. The album performed well in international markets, including the United Kingdom, where it was certified gold. It was released on 7th December 1999 by Virgin Records and was produced entirely by The Neptunes (Pharrell Williams & Chad Hugo). Kaleidoscope is the debut studio album by American singer, songwriter and chef Kelis. Inc Bonus Tracks, Not On Original - On Side D Ltd Edition180g Orange Vinyl Version In Gatefld Sleeve.
